Five Things You Can Do To Prepare For The Best Job Market In Ten Years

With the stock market at new highs, taxes headed to new lows, and a governmental focus on creating new jobs in the US, 2017 promises to be the beginning of one of the HOTTEST JOB MARKETS IN A DECADE. If you’re planning on making a job change in 2017, here are five things you can do to get your job hunt on track starting today.

1) BUILD OR UPDATE YOUR CAREER PLAN
Planning is a critical factor in business success. If you have read any of my books, watched any of my YouTube videos, read my articles on LinkedIn, or listened to my podcasts, you will likely know that I am a very avid advocate of career planning. Regardless of how you do it, the most important thing is that you invest some time in developing a plan and regularly review and develop it.

2) EXPAND YOUR PROFESSIONAL NETWORK
It’s no secret that many of the best jobs get filled before they are posted. The more people you know and the more people who know you, the more exposure you will have to opportunities. A mentor of mine always likes to say, “It’s all about relationships. It’s about the influential people you know and what they say about you when you are not in the room.”

3) UPDATE YOUR RESUME TO BE FOCUSED ON ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The number one problem with most resumes is that they are a list of responsibilities rather than an impactful sales tool for your career that is focused on the things you actually got done. Anyone can list responsibilities on a resume. It’s what you actually did that will separate you from others and get you hired.

4) PRACTICE TELLING YOUR STORY
Your “story” is the elevator speech you will provide anytime you are networking or in an interview when someone asks says,“Tell me about yourself.”? This is a story that should convey your career goals, philosophies, and values but also and give people a real life glimpse insight into who you are as a candidate and more importantly as a person.

5) IDENTIFY A MENTOR
Honestly, for the early part of my career, I thought mentoring was stupid. After all, I was the smartest person I knew. So how would someone help me? What I realized is that it’s not about being smart, it’s about being efficient, and mentoring is very efficient. Finding wise and experienced people to give you advice saves a lot of time and frustration.

Regardless of if you’re currently on the job hunt or considering a move later in 2017, implementing these five strategies today will help get you moving forward with your career.
